I am fairly new at baton twirling fire. I need some new tricks how long to soak them and what to soak them in?

right now i soak the ends in paint thinner for about 15 seconds shake it then light it. it works ok but the fire is huge at first then dies down quickly. im also worried about staining my costume. my school colors are light purple and white which doesnt help.
