Spanish conjugation pregunta

Okay, now I am a tad annoyed about this. Is it possible to have two conjugated verbs next to each other? In all of my time speaking spanish I never once ran into a situation where I found this as unlike English, you cannot omit the "que" or that in Spanish, and it is not that hard to understand as most of the time in english, you can put that between verbs which makes perfect sense. However, I am baffled about this situation. I was reading something in Spanish and it stated, lo que suced�o fue muy extrano. I thought that this was impossible as two conjugated verbs were placed right next to each other and adding a que in between would make no sense. However, then I realized that probably "happened" was being used as a noun so therefore it would be, lo que sucedido fue muy extrano but when I translated it online, it came up as suced�o fue. Is this a rare exception as I thought with the rule that states how no two conjugated verbs can be together has no irregularities. Puedes ayudarme!?
